You’re celebrating your anniversary at a nice restaurant, you order your favorite meal, it’s going to be a wonderful night… but the waiter is in a bad mood, the order is late, and the food is not what you wanted, you can hear an argument in the kitchen… You won’t be going to that restaurant again, and you’ll tell all your friends too.

Bad communication is bad news anywhere, and in the hospitality industry in particular. So how can we prevent Hospitality communication calamities?

1. Have well-trained staff. If you can’t hire well trained staff, find people who are keen workers and willing to learn, and train them yourself. In fact, some employers prefer to train their own staff, rather than re-train experienced staff to meet their standards. Well trained staff is the key to providing professional service.

2. Hospitality is all about service; stress that to your staff. Hospitality staff often serve people who are on vacation; they might have saved all year long for this one holiday, they are paying good money and deserve the best service you can give them and nothing less. They expect friendly and professional service and you and your staff are there to make sure they get it.

3. Good, two-way communication between all levels of staff in any hospitality business is essential to smooth and cost-effective running of your operation. When service staff at your cafe inform management that they are constantly running out of certain items on the menu, and nothing is done about it, it’s bad hospitality communication, and bad for business. Act ASAP and your staff will know that you value their work and share their goal of providing the best service they can give.

4. Fulfill your guest’s expectations. Good hospitality communication between staff and guests starts with good office work – you, as management, need to provide your staff with the best tools they need to offer the guests the service they expect. When guests arrive in their hotel room expecting free internet service, as advertised on the hotel’s website, and find they have to pay for it, they raise their displeasure with reception staff, who are not to fault in this case. Somewhere along the line, someone provided incorrect information. A typical case of bad communication and bad feelings, that could easily have been avoided.

Make sure all the right information is passed on between different levels and departments. Make sure marketing staff is well informed, and advertise only what you know you can deliver. Building unrealistic expectations results in untold disputes – not good for business.

5. As the world is becoming increasingly digitized, ‘computerizing’ your business has become a necessity. Good hospitality management software is an essential tool these days. With the wide range offered, you are bound to find one that suits your needs and budget. From the basic hand-held PDA system for communicating between kitchen and serving staff, to an all-round management package that covers everything from inventory and hotel room reservations to an online booking facility for guests. The initial investment will streamline all communication channels and pay out in the long run.

6. Communicating with foreign tourists: You can’t expect your staff to be fluent in all the foreign languages that they might encounter at work, but they should be aware of different cultures and respect them. Ignorance of cultural practices can upset guests unnecessarily, and we all want to avoid that.

Training your reception and wait staff in a few foreign language greetings will do a world of good to your business, by making your foreign guests feel just a little bit at home in your hotel or restaurant. It doesn’t take that much, really.

You will not impress your customers with wait-staff that have to run and ask the chef about the menu. Reception staff should be well informed about the region and be able to give advice and get information on the local attractions, transport, entertainment etc. It’s part of the service your hotel guests expect to get – and you don’t want to disappoint them with ignorant staff.

8. Quick response: If you run a food takeaway kitchen, your customers come to you for the food, not to sit and wait for it. Service has to be quick. The same applies to just about every other service in the hospitality industry, and an important part of good communications is quick response. Whether it’s answering emails about reservation or other inquiries, providing service at the reception desk, or getting that meal on the table without delay. It’s vital to the good reputation of your business.

9. Listen to your guests. Sometimes it’s the little things that make the difference in customer satisfaction, and those can be easily overlooked in the busy hospitality environment. This is where your guests or customers can help – if you let them. Make it easy for them to let you know about things that they think can make your business give better service. You might not agree with them, but it never hurts to listen. Some customers are happy to let their complaints be known to everyone, and it’s your job to make sure that every guest response gets conveyed to the supervisor or management (by ensuring proper hospitality communication channels). But others prefer to voice their complaint or suggestion anonymously, so make it easy for them, by placing suggestion/service evaluation cards in hotel rooms and service desks – let your guests know you value their feedback.

10. Listen to your staff: Your staff is your hospitality communication line to your customers. Listen to what they have to say. They will know that you value their opinion, and the changes you make will make them feel good in their work environment and proud of their job. You can be assured your customers will sense that they are being served by happy staff who want happy guests. GMAT Examination In A Nutshell

On the official GMAT website stands the claim that “your future begins with GMAT”. Many aspiring MBA students worldwide seem to agree!

GMAT stands for Graduate Management Admission Test, and it’s an important part of selection criteria for admission into many graduate management programs, such as an MBA. The candidate’s GMAT score tells business schools exactly where he fell with respect to other candidates who took GMAT. It is proven that this test can quite accurately predict candidate’s success in business school programs.

GMAT is a computer adaptive test (CAT), administered in secure, standardized test centers around the world. The candidate can take the test all year-round, but not more than once a month. It is possible to reschedule or cancel the test.

Business schools use this test as a criterion for admission into their MBA, Master of Accountancy, and Master of Finance programs. It is certainly a number one choice for MBA aspirants!

GMAT assesses the candidate’s analytical, writing, quantitative, verbal, and reading skills in standard written English. It consists of three sections.

The first section is an analytical writing assessment, where a candidate must demonstrate his writing skills, the ability to think critically and communicate his ideas, through the analysis of an argument and an issue. In the quantitative (i.e. math) section, a candidate demonstrates his arithmetic, algebra, geometry and problem solving skills. The verbal section tests the candidate’s reading comprehension, sentence correction and critical reasoning skills.

It is important to note that the candidate’s business knowledge isn’t tested in itself. However, the skills a candidate needs to demonstrate to do well on this exam (such as time management, decision making, performing under pressure and prioritization), are those that are needed for success – both in a business school, and later in a business world.

The examination takes about three and a half hours.

The difficulty level of the questions goes up or down depending on whether a given question is answered correctly or incorrectly. The scores are calculated on the basis of the difficulty level, and the number of questions answered and completed.

Although there are only three sections tested in a GMAT, a candidate will actually get four scores. All the sections of the test are scored separately, and then the overall score is given in a range from two hundred to eight hundred. Each of these scores is accompanied by a percentile rank, that highlights what proportion of test takers scored lower than you did.

Those that received a percentile rank of 790 and above (and that’s in the top 10% of test takers) can hope to be admitted to the top business schools like Stanford, Wharton or Sloan.

I’m Owed Money – Where Do I Start?

At one point or another someone is likely going to owe you money. If you run a small business in South Jersey, it's almost inevitable. So how do you collect what is rightfully yours?

Contrary to the lawyer battle cry, the answer is not always to "sue them!" Sure, it is surely satisfying to serve someone who has attempted to take advantage of you with a summons. However, before doing so, it's important to evaluate your relationship with the individual / client / customer, and their reasons for not paying. Most significantly, would you like to do further business with this debtor? Are they simply having cash flow issues? Was there a misunderstanding? What does their past history look like?

If you're not quite sure of the situation, give the debtor a call. In as much of a non-confrontational tone as you can muster, remind them of the debt and the terms of the agreement. At this stage, making threats is counter-productive but so is being overly accommodating. In general, a friendly yet firm approach produces the best results.

Regardless of the conversation's outcome (barring the miracle that is immediate payment), send the debtor a letter commemorating the terms of the initial agreement as well as your recent telephone conversation. Send this letter by certified mail to confirm its receipt. Also, be sure to include a deadline for payment or a response. As the original debt holder, you are not subject to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and may give the debtor as many days to respond as you'd like. We recommend ten days from the date of the letter. Ten days is sufficient time to account for delivery time and consideration by the debtor. In our experience, if there is not a response within ten days, there is not going to be one.

The content of your demand letter should vary based upon the situation. Obviously, threatening legal action is not conductive to continued business. Just as a purely informational reminder will do little to spur action from those more unscrupulous of debtors.

Your demand letter did not work. Now what?!?!

You have three options:
– File a Lawsuit on Your Own
– Hire a Collections Agency
– Hire a Lawyer

Filing a Lawsuit on Your Own

Unfortunately, New Jersey law prevents your business from representing itself in court (unless you are a sole proprietor). However, as an individual, it is absolutely your right to file pro se.

For the purposes of suing on a debt, New Jersey civil courts are divided into three sections. They vary in procedure and the amount in dispute.

Law Division
– Claims over $ 15,000
– Discovery period lasting between 150 and 450 days

Special Civil Part
– Claims up to $ 15,000
– Abbreviated discovery period
– Trial dates generally scheduled within three months of filing Complaint

Small Claims
– Claims up to $ 3,000
– No Answer required; Appearance at trial date suffient
– No discovery period
– Trial dates generally scheduled within six weeks of filing Complaint

Law Division cases are not only lengthy but subject to the New Jersey Rules of Practice. As a result, we do not suggest representing yourself (not from self-interest, we promise).

Special Civil Part also is subject to the New Jersey Rules of Practice. However, some of its practices are amended to reflect the Special Civil Part's condensed format. New Jersey Courts' website offers a great how-to-guide for pro se Special Civil Part litigants which you can find here.

Small Claims court is the Wild West of New Jersey courts. The vast majority of litigants are unreported, the cases are, for the most part, the result of personal grievances, and the Judge generally does not want to be there any more than the next person. It makes for interesting viewing, and a certain headache.

Hiring a Collections Agency

Many collections agencies focus solely on bulk collections. However, there are collections agencies that will handle individual debtors. The value in using a collections agency is their ability to manage a large debt portfolio, track down individual debtors, and relentlessly contact debtors in an effort to settle the debt. Communication from a collections agency may also give a debtor a sense of urgency.

However, for those cases where there is a single debtor with a known address, a collections agency is probably not the best route.

Hiring a Lawyer

Surprise, surprise. We recommend retaining a lawyer to assist you in collecting a debt. However, only in cases where it appears as if payment is not forthcoming and / or you do not wish to conduct future business with the debtor. Undoubtedly, a demand letter from your lawyer threatening a lawsuit does not do a whole lot to help a business relationship. However, if you've heard enough excuses and promises to pay, hiring a lawyer is the most effective way to see actual cash. First, debtors tend to pay more attention to attorney correspondence. They realize that legal consequences loom if they fail to pay the debt. Second, this is what lawyers do. We know how the game is played, its rules, and what the likely exit is. Third, even if you "win" in court, you may not see any actual money. Lawyers know the best ways to turn your judgment – which is worth only as much as the paper it is printed on – into cash; By garnishing wages, levying bank accounts, and creating statewide liens.

There is no way around it – trying to collect a debt is a frustrating process. It takes time, patience, know-how, and a sense of objectivity. It can certainly be done on your own. However, to ensure that you receive the most of your money, we recommend an experienced debt collection lawyer.

Burning Fat vs Burning Calories

To lose weight and get in shape you must have a good diet and exercise regularly to burn fat. The first thing you must understand about exercise is that just because you are burning calories does not mean you are burning fat. Your main focus when you exercise should be losing body fat, and you can not lose body fat just from burning calories. When we exercise, our bodies will start burning calories, but the calories that are burned are the calories from carbohydrates in our system. In order to burn calories from your stored fat, your body requires the presence of oxygen. There is a certain amount of oxygen that your body needs in order to start burning fat and the only way for you to measure the amount needed for your own body is to keep up with your target heart rate during exercise.

Please understand that if you continue to only burn calories from carbohydrates, you will lose most "water weight" which leads to a decrease in your metabolism. Also, think of the calories that are burned from carbohydrates as your energy calories. If you lose too much energy calories then your muscles will not receive enough energy to increase your metabolism which indirectly burn fat. Therefore you must increase your calorie intake when you are on an exercise program to replace your burned energy calories.

Burning Fat Calories during exercise

During aerobic exercise, your body goes through several stages before it reaches the point where you are burning fat. You will hear people say that you are only burning sugar (carbohydrates) not fat during the first 10 minutes of exercise. This is true to a certain extent. I say this because you will continue to burn sugar past the 10 minute mark if you are not working out hard enough for your body to want more oxygen; Or you are working out too hard and you can not supply your body with enough oxygen for fat burning. When you exercise you must move at a steady pace (not too fast, not too slow) so your body will utilize your stored fat (not carbohydrates or sugar) as its energy source. Also remember that just because you reached the fat burning stage does not mean you will stay there. Staying at the fat burning stage once again depends on if you are moving at a pace that is right for your body. Make sure that you are within your target heart rate range.

Burning Fat Calories at rest

The only way for you to continue to burn fat calories hours after you have finished working out is through the anaerobic exercise of weight training. Weight training is the key to burning fat at rest. Weight training is an anaerobic activity that will cause you to burn more calories than aerobic exercise. The calories that you are burning during weight training exercises are mostly calories from carbohydrates (meaning you must eat even more calories per day for energy); But the calories you burn at rest are mostly calories from fat. The reason you are burning fat at rest is because weight training increases your metabolism which uses your stored fat as energy.

AFC West 2015 Off-Season Changes

Denver Broncos:

The Broncos caught a piece of bad luck, ala Jacksonville, already by losing 3rd round pick TE Jeff Hauerman for the year with a torn ACL. He was inked in as a replace for TE Julius Thomas. The Broncos are deep at WR but Peyton Manning loves throwing to his tight ends. They did sign TE Owen Daniels after he spent a year in Baltimore, which surprised no one since it must be a separate contract that has him permanently tethered to coach Gary Kubiak. He has been a bit injury-prone as he ages but he is the best that Peyton will have for now.

The Broncos did pull a shocker with their 1st round pick by selecting marijuana fan DE Shane Ray from Missouri. If his lack of intelligence during the days leading up to the draft was temporary insanity, this was a huge steal and will bolster the Broncos solid pass rush this year. The Broncos focused much more on the run last year than they did in any year with Peyton and it proved successful. So, to help that aspect and to help keep Peyton off his aged back, they added OT Ty Sambrailo from Colorado St and C Max Garcia from Florida.

San Diego Chargers:

I liked the Chargers choice of RB Ryan Mathews in 2010 but I didn’t expect him to have the issues he has had staying healthy. As a Big Ten guy, I really like their choice this year of RB Melvin Gordon from Wisconsin. They may not have needed to trade up to get him, but there was no reason to take any chances when you know that he will be The Man in their backfield. He doesn’t catch a lot of passes so Danny Woodhead will see his normal workload. I don’t understand the Chargers management’s interest in moving to LA, but these guys don’t become billionaires by caring about more than how they can squeeze the most dollars from the lil’ guy.

While the talk of moving prompted QB Philip Rivers to voice his displeasure, ownership made the right decision to not trade him. I expect a lot of improvement on that side of the ball this year with Gordon toting the rock. On defense, they still have some work to do, but adding LB Denzel Perryman from Miami was a solid step in the right direction. Additions of CB Craig Mager and LB Kyle Emanuel with the next 2 picks were decent and showed that San Diego is not so into itself that it couldn’t find San Marcos, TX and Fargo ND on a map.

Fantasy starters: QB Philip Rivers, RB Melvin Gordon, WR Keenan Allen, TE Antonio Gates

Fantasy bench: WR Malcolm Floyd

Fantasy Sleeper: TE Ladarius Green

Kansas City Chiefs:

The Chiefs had the most laughable group of WRs outside of Cleveland in the league last year. Yes, they had zero TD receptions but they still had more talent than Cleveland did. However, it was time to start anew there. They started by adding WR Jeremy Maclin in free agency. That is an infinite improvement over their flaccid group from last year but they also added WR Chris Conley from Georgia in the 3rd round. I like his chances to make a major contribution in 2015 due to his size. At 6’2″ 213, he is the anti-Maclin. With those pieces in place and a solid running game, they turned to defense and nicely plugged holes. Getting CB Marcus Peters from Washington was a top-notch selection. He is aggressive, but if that can be reined in and aligned with the NFL’s garbage rules to allow WRs have free roam, he has great upside. That aggressiveness may have played a big part in his early dismissal from Washington but I think he grows up and into his role this season.

Oakland Raiders:

After looking like they may end up winless last season, the Raiders put together a nice ending stretch that gave them a bit of spark heading into 2015. Landing stud WR Amari Cooper with their first pick only fanned that spark into a nice fire. QB Derek Carr seemed to “get it” late last season and having Cooper to throw to will accelerate his progression into a true NFL QB. After years of laughable 1st round picks on wide receivers, the Raiders struck gold with this one. After that, the Raiders used their remaining nine picks on positions across the board. There are no real standouts in the group, but they sure did favor the three major Florida universities as five of those nine picks came from those schools.

If RB Latavius Murray proves that he can carry the load for a full season, the offense will be greatly improved. In addition to Cooper, the Raiders picked up WR Michael Crabtree. On defense, the Raiders spent some money on LBs Malcolm Smith and Curtis Lofton as well as DT Dan Williams. Keep your weapon on safe until you are ready to fire . If your firearm is equipped with an external safety device, never disengage it until you are ready to cause your firearm to discharge a bullet. There have been many instances where people have disengaged safety devices while their firearm was in the holster and then proceeded to shoot themselves. Do not turn off a safety device until the firearm is actually pointed at the target.

Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you intend to fire . Actually placing your finger on the trigger should be the very last action before firing the weapon. As soon as you are done shooting the finger should be immediately taken off the trigger and lain along the frame of the firearm. This helps ensure a firearm is not discharged incidentally. Humans have a flinch response that causes them to clinch their hands when started. If your finger was on the trigger while you were walking with a firearm and you tripped, you would instinctively pull the trigger. With your finger outside the trigger guard and along the frame of the weapon this will not happen.

It is also important that there are other rules common to firearm usage, or even specific shooting disciplinals. You may even create other rules as you see fit. Anything that makes you safer with a firearm is acceptable. Nothing will reduce accidents 100% however, these four rules will greatly increase you safe and enjoyable use of firearms.
